The year 2014 begins with strange news for the residents of Strackholt: A small group of Eritrean refugees are stranded in the 1500-person village. In the midst of the East Frisian emptiness, the newcomers are expected to await the outcome of their asylum procedure. Helmut, a retired school principal and Christiane, a journalist, take on the five men. The refugees accept the offer of help with great vigor. But with each day new conflicts arise, because the mills of the authorities grind slowly and the daily uncertainty consumes the nerves of all involved.
